an original story about Horace, the brave bird that
inspired a 150-year-old American tradition. 

During the height of Covid shelter-in-place, the author volunteered to host his son's 4th-grade holiday party. Over zoom and with children old enough to pass real judgment, the stakes were raised. He needed a fresh holiday story, one not moored down with retellings of pilgrims and feasts.

So he wrote one.

 

Each year a lucky turkey is pardoned at the White House by the President of the United States. The Turkey that Ran Away gives us a charming backstory of the brave bird, the iconic President, and the special love-at-first-sight bond that started this American tradition.

Initially designed through free web images, then illustrated by the kids (as seen below), and professionally illustrated by artist Deborah Bolton in 2022, this first edition story has come to life more each year.  We hope you love it and make reading it your new holiday tradition.
